Gonna go off on a little rant
I really hate when Caribbean people, Dominicans, Puerto Ricans and Cubans in particular, try to deny their African roots. I find being Afro-Cuban, Afro-Puerto Rican or Afro-Dominican to be something beautiful. It shows that you come from a lineage of people that have overcome a lot in their life time.
I’m not judging you if you don’t feel any tie to Africa, but personally, I do myself. When Trujillo eradicated the drum from Merengue, it was because he wanted it to be less African. I pity people like that. People who have no sense of home.
I don’t care what anyone says. Africa is a very beautiful continent, and it is sad to me when my people don’t want to admit that they have ties to it.
The rich history, the dancing, the mannerisms, the food, the flavor, the music that comes from Africa originally sooooooooo heavily influences Dominicans, Cubans, etc.
I love Guagancó. I love religions that are still practiced nowadays that have maintained a tie to Africa.
I don’t know man. To deny that you have any type of African roots, wanting to get surgery because you have a “big nose”, perming your hair because it’s not “good”, bleaching your skin or wearing lighter makeup because it’s not “light enough”. That’s all so sad to me.
No I am not directly from Africa, but I know I have roots in Africa. And I think it’s beautiful.
